Kick Up Your Heels at USO-Themed Party

Posted: February 15, 2018

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (Feb. 9, 2018) — The 1940s USO-themed dance is back, bringing with it authentic food and fashion during OKM Music Goes USO! The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. March 3 at Father Lynch Hall Event Center, Eighth Street and Keeler Avenue, in Bartlesville.

“Step back in time and join us for a wonderful evening of big band sounds, swing dancing and honoring our military,” said Mary Lynn Mihm, board chairwoman of OKM Music. “Proceeds from this event will help support the 34th OKM Music Festival in June, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to USO Oklahoma to salute and support our military.”

Tickets are $30 each for general admission and $25 each for active and retired military service members. Five dollars of every ticket goes to USO Oklahoma. Make reservations through Feb. 27 at okmmusic.org under the Tickets menu.

Dress in 1940s style and boogie to the big band sounds of Floyd Haynes and his Orchestra, featuring vocalist Jae Simmons. Not sure how to swing dance? Check out the YouTube video demonstrations. Retired and active military men and women are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Then be ready for the costume and dance contests!

The event hall sparkles in red, white, and blue décor, and the food is reminiscent of a 1940s canteen or USO club. Enjoy assorted canapés, stuffed celery, deviled eggs, French onion dip and chips, fried chicken, Mason jar pies, cookies and old-fashioned sheet cakes. True to the canteen offerings, milk and Coca Cola are on the menu as well as coffee, tea and water. In addition, a cash bar is provided.

History buffs can get in on the trivia contests, or make it interesting by purchasing a chance on the Spin-to-Win wheel where everyone is a winner! Choose from a wide selection of prizes, including jewelry, gift cards and retro gifts.

Help support OKM programs by buying OKM Bonds, which are available for purchase at the event. OKM presents a June music festival each year and promotes youth in their pursuit of music performance through No Child Clef Behind, a summer conservatory, group master classes and scholarships.

Attendees also are welcome to bring a donation for Bartlesville Blue Star Mothers, who send care packages to local soldiers overseas. Items needed are foot powder, baby wipes, pull-top canned meats (no pork), individual powder drink mixes, coffee, tea, condiment packets, crackers, cereal bars, peanut butter, toothbrushes, tobacco items or a cash donation.
