Bartlesville Symphony Seeking Next Music Star

The Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra is seeking our next music star in the 2018-2019 Myrna Hershberger Young Artist Competition.  

The competition provides young musicians the opportunity for exposure within the community through a solo performance with the Bartlesville Symphony.  Additionally, a $500 cash prize will be awarded to each of the winners.

Any instrumentalist (including piano) or vocalist in grades 10 through 12 may apply.  All applicants must be at least 15 years old at the time of the competition.

As many as one vocalist and one instrumentalist may be named as winners. Please visit www.bsook.org for additional eligibility rules and details about the young artist application process. 

All applications are due online or in person at the to the BSO office at 415 S Dewey Suite 201 in Bartlesville by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2018. The competition will take place on January 13, 2019, and the winner(s) will perform on the BSO concert on March 23, 2019.

In the last 37 years of the Young Artist Competition, BSO has crowned over 100 young artist winners and awarded up to $50,000 in scholarship money. 

Past Young Artist Award winners include Markus Klawun, Letitia Singleton, Travis Dunlap, Kennedy (Brittney) Caughell, Caitlyn Caughell, Jay Hershberger, and Carla Janzen.

“We are proud of the talent Bartlesville has produced over the decades,” commented BSO conductor Lauren Green. “So many of them have gone on to professional performing and teaching careers around the world.”

The Young Artist Competition is one of three BSO music education programs.

In addition to the competition, the BSO provides a free yearly 5th Grade Concert—now partnering with the Carnegie Hall’s Link-Up program—as well as musician outreach into local elementary schools. 

BSO music education programs are sponsored by ConocoPhillips, an Allied Arts and Humanities Grant, and through many generous donors.

Established in 1957, the BSO provides cultural enrichment, music education, and performing arts appreciation for Bartlesville and surrounding communities.
